A Wife's Blessings

A Help Meet for Him

Our ladies group at church (Flamekeepers) has been going through a study on the book, Created to be His Help Meet by Debi Pearl.  I’d had the book for a while before we began the study, and I’d even read most of the book.  It is an excellent book, but it’s difficult to swallow at times!  The entire book discusses the fact that the wife was created for the husband.  Man was created first, and the woman was created as his helper.  As I began studying the book, I thought about how the term “Help Meet” is traditionally used.

Here’s what I mean.  We often use the term "Help Meet" as one word.  In this sense we're actually substituting the word "meet" for "mate."  At first instinct you think, “Help Meet, Help Mate, what’s the difference?”

When you look up the word meet in the dictionary it can be used as an adjective, noun, or verb.  The only one that actually makes sense in this Biblical context is to use it as an adjective.  [Because it’s definitely not talking about a track meet (noun) or the act of meeting someone (verb)].

With that in mind, consider this.  As an adjective, it means "precisely adapted to a particular situation, need, or circumstance:  very proper."  So my instead of using the term in the traditional manner, I like to read the verse more like this,

"And the Lord God Said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help......meet for him."  Genesis 2:18

Now insert the definition, and you get this, "I will make him an help 'precisely adapted to his particular situation, need or circumstance' for him"!

Did you get chill bumps (or Glory Bumps as we call them around here) at God's Wording?  I did!  That means so much more to me than "a help meet/mate"!  What a huge responsibility!  I am precisely adapted to my husband for his particular situation, need or circumstance!

So a huge part of being all that God desires of me is striving to fulfill that role in my husband’s life!  You may be thinking that no man deserves this type of service, but from my personal testimony, I can tell you that you, your marriage, and your entire family will be blessed beyond measure if you strive to adapt yourself to your husband’s particular situation, need, or circumstance!  May God bless you on your journey as "An help meet for him"!
